A wealth of geological
and natural wonders are held within its five-mile-wide cauldera. There are
lava formations, waterfalls and the world's largest obsidian field.

Lava Lands Visitor Center
- The Pine Mountain Observatory, Bend area
The observatory's 15-inch and 24-inch telescopes are available
to view Jupiter, comets, the moon, star clusters and faraway galaxies every
Friday and Saturday night from late May through September, weather permitting.
Drop-in viewing begins at dusk and continues all night. Interpretive
programs start at 9 p.m. A donation of $3 per person is requested to
help defray cost. Located 26 miles SE of Bend, Oregon, and 8 miles south
of Millican at an elevation of 6500 feet. Free camping is available. A group of amateur
astronomers, called the Friends of Pine Mountain
Observatory, helps to operate the Summer visitors season as well as to visit
classrooms during the school year as part of the Observatory's outreach
campaign. Advance notice is required if you plan to bring a group larger than
eight people. Other times
possible by advance reservation. Skies need to be clear, "Dark Moon" weekends
