Girl Scouts of Western Rivers Council * Summer Lovin' Fun Patch Program

STARGAZING

Warm summer evenings are a great time to do a little stargazing. Plan a sleep-over or backyard over-night and complete some badge work at the same time.

Brownie Girl Scouts-

See Space Explorer pages 138-139 in the Brownie Girl Scout Handbook Activity #1 The Night Sky. Go stargazing with someone who knows the planets and stars, or have someone help you read a star map. Try to find the North Star, the Big Dipper or other constellations. Look for the planets overhead.

Also do the prep-work for Activity #4 Shadow Time and #5 Star Maker.

Junior Girl Scouts-

See Sky Search pages 128 & 129 in Girl Scout Badges and Signs Activity #1. Learn how to use a star map. Be able to point out to others what the different symbols on the map mean. Obtain a star map for your stargazing location and appropriate time of year to help you complete your badge.

Activity #3. Look at a star map and choose six constellations. Note any distinguishing features such as size, shape, number and brightness. With your star map, locate the constellation and point them out to others.

Also do some prep-work for Activities #8 and #9.

Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts-

See Space Exploration page 91 in the Cadette, Senior Interest Project book, Activity #2, Part Two. Write your own science fiction story about life on planet earth in the future or life elsewhere in the universe.

Activity #4. Visit a museum or other facility that has an exhibit, display or presentation on aerospace, astronomy or a related field. Based on your visit, select at least one topic that interested you and explore it further on your own.
