TERMS AND NAMES RELATED TO THE
INTERNATIONAL ASPECT OF GIRL SCOUTING

ROBERT, LORD BADEN-POWELL (1857-1941)
The founder of Scouting for boys in England in 1908. When Lord Baden-Powell was asked how to pronounce his name correctly, he responded with this verse:

"Man, matron, maiden,
Please call in Baden.
Further for Powell,
Rhyme it with soul."

AGNES BADEN-POWELL (1858 - 1945)
The founder of the Association of Girl Guides in Great Britain in 1910. As Lord Baden-Powell's sister, she recognized the great interest girls in England had for the Boy Scouting Movement. He asked her to organize Scouting for girls.

JULIETTE GORDON LOW (1860 - 1927)
Known to everyone as "Daisy", Juliette Low was born in Savannah, Georgia on October 31, 1860. She worked with Agnes Baden-Powell in England with the Girl Scouting Movement and brought it to the United States in 1912. From the beginning she brought an international feeling to Girl Scouting.

OLAVE, LADY BADEN-POWELL (1889 -1977)
She became the World Chief Guider in 1930. As Lord Baden-Powell's wife, she traveled extensively to further Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.

WORLD ASSOCIATION OF GIRL GUIDES AND GIRL SCOUTS
A non-formal education organization based on spiritual values, and open to all girls and young women, without distinction of creed, race, nationality or any other circumstance. 144 countries belong to WAGGGS.

WORLD THINKING DAY
World Thinking Day is observed on February 22nd each year, the joint birthdays of the World Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell and the Founder, Lord Baden-Powell. On this day, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world remember each other and the World Movement.

THE JULIETTE LOW WORLD FRIENDSHIP FUND
The Juliette Low World Friendship fund was established in 1927 as a memorial to Juliette Gordon Low to perpetuate her dream:

bulletof bringing girls together across borders to share the "game" Lord Baden-Powell called Scouting
bulletof a world of friends with heightened understanding
bulletof a program for girls which would contribute to international understanding and good will
