Human beings want and need appreciation for the work that
they do. Whether in the form of a simple thank-you for a small job well done or
a formal commendation for years of faithful service in a key position of an
organization, such acknowledgement is a signal to the recipient that she or he
is noticed and appreciated, that she or he is recognized.
AN ATTITUDE OF APPRECIATION CAN BE CREATED BY:
 | Being aware of the extra effort put forth by an individual |
 | Taking the time to mention a person’s service or to thank her or him for a
job well done |
 | Helping people to attain a higher level of achievement |
 | Recommending a person for special training or participation in a special
event |
 | Developing a climate wherein work is sincerely noticed and noted at all
levels |

WHEN AND HOW TO RECOGNIZE
If a recognition takes the form of a pin, badge, certificate, or
other tangible token, or is merely a formal thank-you, presentation at an
appropriate ceremony can highlight the expression of appreciation and enhance
it’s significance for the recipient. When and how the recipient is recognized
will make the expression of gratitude memorable.

ADULT RECOGNITION IN GIRL SCOUTING
HOW TO NOMINATE SOMEONE
 | Determine who will nominate the person and fill out the application. The
award sponsor is responsible for seeing that all of the paperwork is filled
out, pulled together and mailed/e-mailed/returned on time. The sponsor should probably
be the person who best knows why this nominee should receive an award. The
sponsor also ensures that nomination packets do not include more endorsement
letters than required. |
 | Decide which award the nominee should be nominated for. If you have
questions about which award your candidate should be nominated for, contact
your Service Unit Recognition Liaison, who is responsible for awards, or your
local service center. |
 | Secure an award booklet from your local service center or Service Unit Recognition
Liaison or all the forms are online and secure people to fill out letters of endorsement. Remind them
of the deadline for returning their letter to you! All pieces of
nomination packets must be returned TOGETHER to be considered – nomination
packets returned in parts will not be considered.
|
 | The sponsor hands out the letters of endorsement to people whom best know
the nominee’s service and accomplishments. Hand out as many as you like but
only the number of letters required for the award will be considered, so the
sponsor will pick the best ones to turn in. Packets that include more
letters than required will not be accepted. When handing out the
endorsement letters, the sponsor should include a self-addressed return
envelope and the return date. Follow up with a friendly reminder a few days in
advance of your deadline. Please use the forms provided. Forms are available
on our website, on computer disk or in paper packet given to leaders. |
Mail completed packets by February 8th to:
Girl Scouts of
Western Rivers Council
Attn: Adult Recognition Operating Team
1577 Pearl St., Suite 300
Eugene, OR 97401
POINTS TO CONSIDER
 | Service given during the last program year -October 1st through
September 30th
|
 | Consider carefully the persons chosen to write the letters of endorsement
for the nominee. They should be able to convey information about their
feelings clearly and concisely through the written word. To give your nominee
the best possible chance of receiving the award requested, help the people
writing the endorsements to identify specific times when they have witnessed
this person’s accomplishments. Try to assist each person in writing about a
different facet of your nominee to avoid emphasizing the same qualities. Only refer to accomplishments that have occurred since the last award received
by your nominee. Do not include accomplishments that were achieved to receive
the past award. Refer to the list of past award recipients. |
 | Make sure that all forms and letters are printed in ink or typed. Anything
handwritten not be accepted! Except Troop Girl Member form for
Outstanding Troop Leader Award. Forms may be e-mailed to
mlabrasseur@wrgirlscouts.org
. Please make sure that when e-mailing that all forms and letters come
in together. |
 | When nominating someone, who has received an award in the past, be sure
that you and the people writing the letters stress the nominee's
accomplishments since the last award. |
 | Remember that these awards are not given for years of service but rather
for service by people whose accomplishments exceed what is normally expected
of persons in their position. Show us the results of his/her
dedication! |
