Cleawox Building Fund

Support for Girl Scouting comes in many forms. Half of our annual budget comes from the product sales. The other half comes from program fees, United Ways, grants, and the financial support of our families and the communities we serve.

In December a long-time donor, Marie King, asked me to stop by her home. She and her son Alan presented Girl Scouts of Western Rivers Council a check for $35,000. Marie’s daughter, Anne Greig, served on our board of directors as a vice-president and member-at-large from 1989 to 1995. Anne’s death was sudden and unexpected in 1995. Many staff, board members and volunteers remember her fondly.

In her honor her family has specified this gift will go towards the rebuilding of the Clippers Unit at Camp Cleawox. Our council is currently in the beginning stages of a council-wide long range property plan. Our properties need repair, maintenance and replacing. We are planning a temporary solution for the Clippers Unit this summer, but this gift will be set aside until permanent plans are developed.

What a wonderful way to recognize a loved one and help Girl Scouting continue to change girls’ lives in the future. If you’d like more information on how you can help build a better future at Cleawox by contributing to the Building Fund, please contact Amy at 485-5911, ext. 112.

What Is the Become, Belong, Believe and Build Society?
GSWRC holds at least one fund raising luncheon each year at which guests are asked to consider making a multi-year financial gift to the council. This has been a successful event and the goal is to eventually do an event in each of the four areas of the council. For more information please contact Amy at 485-5911 ext. 112. It is a great opportunity to celebrate all the wonderful things Girl Scouting can do for girls.

How Are Funds Raised?
Fund Raising is the responsibility of adults in Girl Scouting. Money is raised in a variety of ways.

bulletOur annual campaigns consist of mailings done to individuals in the winter and early summer, and mailings to businesses and organizations periodically through out the year.
bulletFamilies help the council provide funding for girls through the Family Giving Campaigns that are conducted with girl and adult registration. Families are asked to consider a gift of at least $20.00 per family to help cover the cost of providing program.
bulletBecome, Belong, Believe & Build raises money through annual luncheons at which people are asked to contribute through a multi-year pledge, however, some individuals prefer to contribute annually at the BBBB luncheon.
bulletIn-kind gifts are gifts of materials or services that are donated to the council. The donor receives an in-kind donation for tax purposes.
bulletGrants and restricted gifts are money that comes to the organization dedicated for a particular fund or purpose. Examples of this would be money given for camperships or to improve Camp Cleawox and also grant money given to pay for a particular program.
bulletThe council participates in seven United Way/Fund campaigns. Each year a grant is written requesting money to help run the programs for girls.
bulletAlbertson’s Community Partners Cards let people do their regular shopping and know that a percentage of the purchase will come to the Girl Scouts.
bulletThe recycling of printer and laser cartridges can also benefit the council. Postage-paid envelopes are available at every Girl Scout service center in the council. Simply seal the cartridge in the envelope and drop it in the mail and not only will the council benefit with a rebate, but valuable materials will be kept out of the landfills.

With adequate funding we can continue to provide programs to all girls.

We give thanks to all of you who give to Girl Scouting in your time, gifts in-kind and financial contributions.

How Can I Help the Council Plan for the Future?
It is very rare that a person regrets having been truly generous or thoughtful. This is especially true when the gift is to an agency or organization that is meaningful to the donor. But how can you give away assets that may be needed by your family? One solution is to make a bequest - a gift in your Will. There are some advantages to this kind of giving, such as:

bullet

It is easy; just a few sentences in your will and the gift is made.

bullet

It is revocable; until your will goes into effect, you are free to change your plans.

bullet

It is versatile; you can give something specific, an amount of money or a percentage gift, make the gift contingent on certain events, or a remainder gift.

bullet

It may have tax advantages; check with your attorney, accountant or estate planning representative for further information. Girl Scouts is a 501(C)(3) organization.

For further information, please contact the Development Department  at Girl Scouts of Western Rivers Council.

Multiply impact of contribution:

bulletYou can multiply the impact of your contribution if your employer offers a corporate match for charitable gifts. If it does, please ask your Human Resources or Personnel advisor for the form for matching gifts. This doubles your contribution!
bulletIf your company or organization has a newsletter that would let us provide a notice or article, let us know and we will contact them.

Please remember our responsibility to provide adult-generated funds for Girl Scout programs.

Will my Gift be Tax Deductible?
The simple answer to that question is maybe.

Girl Scouts of Western Rivers Council, Inc., is chartered by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and has been designated by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(C)(3), non-profit corporation. This means that gifts received for the organization and operation of the Council are acknowledged under the tax statutes. It is the responsibility of the Council administration to report, monitor and acknowledge tax deductible contributions.

What the above paragraph basically says is that gifts given to the council must be used for the best use of all the girls. This differs from money that is given to benefit a specific troop, group, patrol, or service unit. Because the tax-exempt status resides with the council money given to other units of girls typically does not qualify for tax deductions. Refer to the Volunteer Guide for more information on troop fund raising.

ALBERTSON’S and GIRL SCOUTS

Community Partners

Albertson’s supports Girl Scouts of Western Rivers Council through the Community Partners program. You can get a Community Partners card from the local Girl Scout service center and present it each time you make a purchase. The amount of that purchase is credited to the account number for GSWRC and a quarterly check is sent to us for 4% of that total amount.

Sometimes we may forget to show our Community Partners card when we pay for our purchases. Now Albertson’s has made it easier for those customers who also use the Albertson’s Preferred Savings Card. The two numbers can be linked in the Albertson’s computer, which means that every purchase you make using your Preferred Savings Card will automatically be credited to the GSWRC account number. You no longer need to show your Community Partners card in addition to your Preferred Savings Card in order for GSWRC to get credit.

How do you get your Preferred Savings card linked to the Community Partner’s card? Following are three ways to do this:

Present both cards at the check out counter and the two numbers will be read and linked in the computer.  Go to www.albertsons.com on the Internet. You can log-in to your account and link your cards together. Pick up a form at Albertson’s, fill it out and mail it. Use the number from your Preferred Savings Card and also our Community Partners number, which is 490001201856.

Thanks for using your Preferred Card to support girls in our community.

Recycle Print/Laser Cartridges
Girl Scouts of Western Rivers Council participates in a printer cartridge recycle program with a company named EnviroSmart. When you have used cartridges to discard you can drop them into a postage-paid plastic envelope that is available in all the council service centers. Then mail them to EnviroSmart and the council is paid for each cartridge returned in our envelopes.
