Holly Hammann Award
Holly Hammann was an avid Girl Scout. As a girl and an adult, she brought fun
and enthusiasm to all. Holly worked as a counselor at Camp Cleawox and was later
a member of the council board of directors. She contributed greatly to the
camping experiences of many girls in our council. Very early in Holly's
adulthood, she was the victim of a fatal automobile accident. Holly had many
friends and through their generous contributions, Girl Scouts of Western Rivers
Council has established a fund that will give a full campership for use at one
session at Camp Cleawox to the girl who best represents the essence of Girl
Scouting.

GOLD AWARD
The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, has 7
steps, all of which demand efficient organizational, time management, and
leadership skills.
The steps are as follows:
 |
Step one – Organize – by building a framework |
 |
Step two – Lead - by earning the Girl Scout Gold
Leadership Award |
 |
Step three – Network - Earn the Girl Scout Gold Career
Award |
 |
Step four – Explore - Earn the Senior Girl Scout 4 Bs
Challenge |
 |
Step five – Create – Complete the project plan |
 |
Step six – Act – Track the 65 project hours |
 |
Step seven – Reflect – Record reflection and evaluation of
the project. |
The Gold Award project is an opportunity to put
leadership skills, career interests and personal values together to serve
the community. This year the Gold Award was presented to:
Gina Hoppe - Troop #100 of Eugene
Having been committed almost her whole life to figure skating; Gina’s Gold
Award project had a two-fold goal: recognition of figure skaters as
athlete’s worth of a varsity letter and the organization of fifteen years of
photos and articles for the Lane County Ice Center. Working with other
skaters, her coach, the athletic director of her school, and the
advisor/club sport sponsor, she established criteria for earning a figure
skating varsity letter, making it possible for figure skater athletes to
continue to excel in their sport and to be recognized by their student
peers. The historical scrapbook of Lane County Ice with photographs she
produced will help document and preserve the memories of past and present
figure skaters and coaches. Gina spent over 100 hours in accomplishing her
goals and earning this award.
Gina is a 2007 graduate of Churchill High School where she was a member of
the National Honor Society and the varsity soccer and tennis teams, in the
school orchestra and in the International High School and Leadership
programs. She has been an active Girl Scout for 13 years participating in
many local Girl Scout activities and has previously earned the Silver Award,
the highest award for Cadette Girl Scouts. She is a member of the Faith
Center and the Norkenzie Christian Church where she has participated with
the Youth Group and the Mexico Mission trips. Gina is the daughter of Gary
and Judy Hoppe of Eugene.
Meaghn
Dimler – Troop # 403 of Myrtle Point
Concerned at the high incidence of sexual assault and abuse in her
area, Meaghn chose a Gold Award project with a goal of increasing community
awareness of the problem and of possible solutions. She organized and
implemented the Sexual Assault and Abuse Awareness Fair at the Pony Village
Mall in North Bend, Oregon, bringing together many community organizations
who deal with the problem in one or more of its many aspects. Having these
agencies with their visual aids, informational literature, informative
speakers and self-defense demonstrations all present at one time in one very
public space was designed to inspire discussion as well as to provide
valuable information about the resources available in the community for
combating the problem.
Meaghn is an 18-year-old sophomore at Southwestern Oregon Community College
where she is active in Student Support Services and the Spanish Conversation
Group. She belongs to the Myrtle Point First Christian Church where she
belongs to the Youth Group. She has been an active Girl Scout for 13 years
participating in many local and international Girl Scout adventures and has
previously earned the Bronze Award, the highest award for Junior Girl
Scouts, and the Silver Award, the highest award for Cadette Girl Scouts.
Meaghn is the daughter of Beth Dimler of Myrtle Point.

SILVER AWARD
The Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl
Scouting and the highest possible award attained by a Girl Scout age 11-14.
The Silver Award recognizes the efforts of girls in a wide range of Girl
Scout and community experiences as well as for working to better themselves
and the lives of others.
Girls earning the Silver Award must complete six steps. These requirements
include:
 |
build skills |
 |
explore career possibilities |
 |
increase their leadership skills |
 |
make a commitment to improving themselves and their
community |
 |
Doing the actual project. This project must benefit Girl
Scouting, the community, or both, and must take at least 40 hours to
complete. |
 |
Step six involves evaluation and reporting to the Council
Silver and Gold operating team. |
This year the Silver Award was presented to: |
|
Rachel Nice
For her Silver Award project, Rachel chose to repaint the Billie shack at
the Pleasant Hill High School, an achievement that benefited both the school
district and the community. Using her management and leadership skills,
Rachel drew on the talents and expertise of family and friends in
accomplishing very professional results.
Jennifer Parry & Tasha Silva
For their joint Silver Award project, Jennifer and Tasha each took on
specific responsibilities in planning and producing three summer Girl Scout
events for their community. They hoped that providing activities for the
girls during the summer would help to keep them interested in Girl Scouting.
In conjunction with the Teddy Bear Tea, the Swim Party and the Game Day, the
community was involved and served through reading by a librarian, making
tray favors and liners for the hospital, a canned food collection, and
clean-up of the park.
Melanie Morrison
For her Silver Award project, Melanie chose to plan and product Zoo Safari,
an overnight event for Brownies designed to broaden their knowledge and
interest in the world of animals. Melanie enlisted the aid of area Girl
Scout girls and adults in carrying out her theme through activities, crafts
and games. Canned food was collected for Brethren House.
Allison Warrick
For her Silver Award project, Allison planned and directed a Brownie
Sleepover at Madison School in January. Allison enlisted the aid of friends,
family and school staff in providing science activities and experiments
designed to help girls earn Brownie Try-Its.
Courtney Moss
Because of her fond memories and involvement as a camper and P.A. Courtney
chose to plan and produce Hula-riffic, a weeklong day camp for Brownies of
the Umpqua Girl Scout Service Area. She recruited and directed other Girl
Scout girls and adults to assist her in providing the games, songs, crafts
and activities that made the event a success.

Elizabeth Warrick
Building on her belief that people need to learn early to care for the
welfare of others in the community, Elizabeth planned and implemented a
session of information and activities for the students at the Cartwheels
Preschool in North Bend. The children made and decorated simple Christmas
wreaths that were distributed by them and their families to the residents of
Inland Point before Christmas.
Morgan Halbert
For her Silver Award project, Morgan planned and directed a Junior Sleepover
at Madison School in January. Morgan enlisted the aid of friends, family and
beauty professionals in planning activities designed to help girls of this
age have fun and feel good about themselves.
Hannah Hamovitz & Shanda
Zettle
Wishing to inspire the younger girls of their area to stay in Girl Scouting
because of the opportunities for growth, adventure and fun, Hannah and
Shanda conceived and implemented a 2-day Day Camp for them in the spring of
2007, each taking on specific areas of organization and leadership. Because
of their own love for animals, they chose games, crafts and activities all
relating to a Fun with Pets theme. Professionals from the community and
other Girl Scouts helped Hannah and Shanda to accomplish their Silver Award
project.
Kylie Soder
Because of her fond memories and involvement as a camper and P.A. Courtney
chose to plan and produce Give our Regards to Broadway, a weeklong day camp
for Juniors of the Umpqua Girl Scout Service Area. Working with area adults
in the world of theater and with the help of other Girl Scout girls and
adults, she was able to give over 30 girls the opportunity to experience all
the facets of producing and acting in a play, while at the same time they
participated in the more traditional games, songs and activities of a day
camp. |
