Girl Scout councils in Oregon and SW Washington are in the process of realigning to form one high-capacity Girl Scout council serving approximately 20,000 girls in Oregon, and Clark and Skamania Counties in Washington.  This is part of a national initiative to create councils that are better equipped to meet the needs of girls in today’s fast-changing world.

Girl Scout councils across the country are joining Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) in a historic transformation to modernize the iconic organization and focus on leadership development for girls in the 21st century.  Girl Scouts of Western Rivers, Winema, Santiam and Columbia River, plus parts of Silver Sage and Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho councils, will be merging to form Girl Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington Council.  This name was chosen after a survey of volunteers and girls in all the affected councils and with the approval of GSUSA.

The realignment process began in October 2007 and the merger is planned to be completed in October 2008. Councils are entering into the realignment process with minimal interruption of services. “In all our planning the primary goal is to provide a seamless program transition for our girls and volunteers,” said Lorraine Thomas, Co-Chair of the Council Realignment Committee. “We are excited about the many opportunities and resources we will gain by joining together as Girl Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington.”

Council Realignment Subcommittees
Our Council will be allowed to share one or two names of people that we would like to recommend for the realignment subcommittees. The Council Realignment Committee (CRC) will want to balance skills, experience, geographic representation etc…. to obtain the broadest possible range of views. If you would like to suggest yourself or another person for consideration, please e-mail Pat Shaw with  skills/experience/abilities at pshaw@wrgirlscouts.org  / 1-800-522-8772 ext. 113.
Subcommittees will not all be formed at the same time and when they do get started, their work is apt to be intense for a few months.   Girl Scout volunteers who have an interest in a particular topic can give input through subcommittees' study groups.
